Interior design psychology is a field within environmental psychology, which concerns the environmental conditions of the interior. It is a direct study of the relationship between an environment and how that environment affects the behaviour of its inhabitants, with the aim of maximizing the positive effects of this relationship. Through interior design psychology the performance and efficiency of the space and the well-being of the individual are improved.
What it is to me? Designing from the inside out.
Our external environments and where we spend our time, have an incredible impact on how we feel. They also impact the choices we make and how live our lives. Our environments have the ability to consciously or unconsciously, support or hinder us in ways we may not immediately recognize at first.
Have you ever had to clean the kitchen before you started to prepare dinner? How about organize the office before studying or getting to work? For most of us, there are areas in our lives where we rely on the environment to support us psychologically. It happens naturally all day long!
Think about your work space or office. Is this a place you enjoy going? Does it inspire you and motivate you to do your best work? Or, is it a place that makes you feel awful? Sad, depressed, dreading life (if yes, read this post). The places we spend time greatly affect our mental and emotional well-being, we just have to pay attention.
By creating an environment that is supportive to our overall well-being, we will instantly begin to feel change. By shifting space outside ourselves, we ultimately shift space within. It’s proven science.
Think of a space that you spend time in that may not be serving you to its fullest extent. Whether this is your kitchen, your closet or perhaps a shared space like an apartment, consciously examine what in the space bothers you and turns you off, and what draws you in? By paying attention to the feelings that arise, you will begin to understand how our possessions and the spaces we occupy, impact how we live. This is design psychology!
